A “Dream Ticket”

By Grant on March 6th, 2008

Recently it has been suggested that the two Democratic hopefuls, Senator Barack Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton be lumped together on a ticket. This has been suggested for several reasons, such as the broad differences between them and other factors that make people think that a ticket between them would be a good rival to the Republicans.

This dream ticket seems good, but then you have to look at who should be the President on the ticket and who the Vice President. Seems easy, since Obama is now the front-runner, but I think that neither of them will be ok with just leaving the other to become the President and then they fall to the way-side as VP.

Clinton, after her three wins on Tuesday, seems to think that she should be on the top of the ticket because the people of Ohio “said so”.

This just seems ridiculous to me. Whoever gets the nomination should get to choose whom they want for their VP, and I don’t think that Obama or Clinton should be forced into having to choosing each other.

People might think that this sort of a ticket would be a good combination, but I just don’t know. We will have to wait and see what happens with Pennsylvania, Florida, Michigan, and all of the other states that still have to hold their contests.

Huckabee dropped out! (finally…)

By Grant on March 4th, 2008

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee finally bowed out of the race, after losing all four of the contests that were held today, Tuesday March 4th in Texas, Ohio, Vermont and Rhode Island.

To be bluntly honest, I don’t know why Huckabee wasted this much time on deciding to drop out. Looking at the numbers, it was obvious that there was no way that he would have been able to win unless he upset every single contest by huge margins, like 90%. I am surprised that some of Huckabee’s insiders did not question why he wasted so much time and money on continuing this campaign, and dividing a small percentage of the Republican Party towards his evangelical message.

On the other hand, we now know who the face of the Republican Party will be for the next couple of months, at least until Election Day in November. John McCain, the Senator from Arizona, will be the nominee for President that will be running against the Democratic nominee that is still to be determined.

A candidate that had been politically shunned a couple months ago, and beaten by George W. Bush 8 years ago, McCain finally got to show the nation how many people like him and think he could be President. Sometimes, we like to jump to conclusions to fast, such as the fact that the Iowa caucuses crowning Huckabee the winner would have been consequential. It seems to me that the Iowa caucuses weren’t so important since McCain received 4th place with only 13% of the votes and is now the Republican nominee.

Needless to say, this Tuesday was more determinate than the Super Tuesday elections. Even though there are not as many delegates at stake, the states of Texas and Ohio are both considered to be “must wins” for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.

Once considered the front-runner, Clinton now has to face a challenge in Senator Barack Obama, who has claimed the front-runner status, and came into these Tuesday contests having won 11 straight contests.

Looking at the CNN projections, it sounds like Clinton won Rhode Island and Ohio while Obama won Vermont. The results are still sketchy for Texas, one of the most delegate rich states.

I think, looking at the future, that this General Election will be one of the most enthralling from an outside viewpoint as well as a political science standpoint. We have broken numbers of voters, as well as breaking the stereotypes that all Presidents have to be old white males.

Other than the voters, this election has already been heated up by the mudslinging. That would be another reason for you, the average voter, to pay attention. I mean, what is the fun in a normal campaign where no mud gets slung? These candidates have to get dirty for us Americans to have fun.

Clinton having a problem releasing papers?

By Grant on February 28th, 2008

Why is it so hard to release important information?

So far, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has admitted in the past couple days that she “may” release her tax returns, and is working as “hard” as she can to release information from her time as the First Lady in the White House.

Now, maybe I am being too overbearing with her releasing of these documents, but I really think that Clinton should have released this during the beginning of her run for President. She may have been able to get away with this as a Senator, but how can you campaign for President and running for change when you will not even show where you got your money? Lately, Clinton loaned 5 million dollars to her campaign. Where did she get this money? Is this residual money from her earnings, or did she get this from PAC’s or lobbyists? There is no way for normal Americans to know where this money has come from right now because she will not release her tax returns.

Clinton said in Tuesday’s debate that she will most likely not release them until she is sure that she will be the party’s nominee.

To me, that sounds like the same old politics. Way to be revolutionary Hillary.
