I know the Dirty Dozen has been on hiatus for a while and I do apologize. But today it has returned. Myself and the other drive time DJ’s have been doing a lot of live remotes lately and I have not been able to do my show on the past few fridays. But today I was able to complete a successful Dirty Dozen and here is the songs that made the cut this week.

KC2: The Best and Worst in Music

I’m really busy this week, so I haven’t really had a chance to scope out the industry to see what big things are going on. But in my surfing of the world wide web, I came across really obvious choices that had been in front of my eyes the whole time.

Good thing of the Week: Myspace

Hands up…who doesn’t have a myspace profile? I’m gonna guess not many of you raised your hands. Same thing…raise your hand if you have a band as a friend or have checked out a band’s myspace. Myspace has been a god-send for bands in the new millennium. Free promotion at its finest. Many bands can credit Myspace for making them “found”. My Chemical Romance was one of the first bands to really utilize myspace’s potential. Websites like Myspace and PureVolume have put many talent scouts in the unemployment line. KBVU itself uses myspace constantly. This is our major tool for finding and communicating with our events artists. This is where we find many bands to introduce to listeners through our indie playlist. I would give more credit to Wikipedia, because it was recently rated as the best site to go to for music information, but Myspace still is a better tool to introduce people to new bands. Sure there’s a lot of saturation now (over 1 million just in the rock genre) but you go to myspace, click on music…and you’ll see a bunch of artists I’ll bet you’ve not heard much of. Check them out, if you don’t like what you hear, that’s ok…I think one of your friends’ bands just uploaded a song to the world.

Bad thing of the Week: Yahoo! Music

Compared to the above site…when you go to the Yahoo Music front page, you see a bunch of artists that everyone knows and I doubt any of you like. I look at their “top 10″ music videos and I see crap. I browse around that first page and the Counting Crows and Lil’ Wayne are just about the only artists I would consider listening to (but that’s when I really want to get outside of my preferences). There’s basically nothing featured on this page except Pop and R&B. It bothers me to think that a site like this doesn’t have a more well-rounded selection. Its “Yahoo!Music” not “Yahoo!PopMusic”. Sites like this just reinforce the over-marketing and over-saturation of Top 40 radio. Sure, the songs are catchy for a while…but pretty soon…the world hates them.

I have survived yet another weekend here at Buena Vista University. Not a lot happened for me this past weekend. We did have a successful live remote at Al’s Liquors on Friday and I am very glad that they let us come out there and promote EDGEFEST! I don’t have much to post today as I had a fairly uneventful weekend. But I did have an interesting story for my Rock Music News today at www.rollingstone.com.

Velvet Revolver to Launch Web Site to Recruit New Singer

If Axl Rose wants back with his old Gn’R band mates, he’s going to have to do it the old-fashioned way: by auditioning over the Internet. Slash of the currently singer-less Velvet Revolver told Billboard that the band plans on setting up a Web site where potential vocalists will post video of themselves in hopes of swaying VR. “The band is actually talking about building a Web site [and] doing some auditions via that, so that’s been something that’s developing at this point,” Slash said of the site, which should be up “in the next month or so.” It’s like when Journey recruited a singer on YouTube, or Rock Star: Supernova without the television. Contrary to what Slash told Rolling Stone last month, the guitarist said the band has no one specific in mind to fill the vacancy left by Scott Weiland’s departure. Velvet Revolver does have an upcoming gig in Las Vegas — a concert booked before Weiland’s exile — and will feature special guests taking turns at the microphone. No word whether Sebastian Bach has been invited.

Kyle Glienke: Sports Investigative Journalism?

So ESPN, in all its sports reporting glory, has recently uncovered in its ‘investigative sports journalism’ show E:60, that……Miguel Tejada is 33 years old instead of the 31 reported by Houston Astros. Upon releasing the news, no one outside little league baseball cared. In fact, Tejada didn’t even play little league baseball in America, so his age really doesn’t matter. Congratulations ESPN on breaking this scandal wide open. Hopefully ESPN will investigate something important next, like why on earth Isiah Thomas had a job coaching the Knicks until recently.

In more important news, KBVU’s coverage of yesterday’s BVU softball game didn’t happen because the game didn’t happen, making it 3 straight rain-outs of games we planned to cover. Awesome. Anyway, here is a list of the games we plan on broadcasting in the upcoming days. It could change…stupid weather, who needs rain anyways?
