KC2: The best and worst in music

This week…kind of a slow week for groundbreaking-newsworthy-amazing music news. Ummm…guns-n-roses was yet again in the news as one of their former guitarists (not named Slash, Buckethead, Bumblefoot, Izzy, Gunns, Tobias, nor Gilby) was in the headlines as Robin Finck yet again joined Nine Inch Nails. I’m telling you, with all this G-N-R publicity, Tibet will be freed and “the Democracy” will be released.

www.myspace.com/gimmegimmes Good thing of the Week: Covers

Face it. We love covers. Everyone. Yes, you too. While it takes talent and is a beautiful thing when an artists creates something original…there is something primal in our nature - we love when someone else manipulates something - for better or worse. For instance, Limp Bizkit - Behind Blue Eyes, Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal, and Disturbed - Land of Confusion…all were big hits for the original artists, then were big hits by the later band. Some people didn’t even know the original versions (sacrilegious, I know). Part of the reason rap is such a popular genre is the sampling of past songs, Run DMC and Aerosmith proved this in the 80’s. Sampling and remixing are both just different forms of “covers”. But the reason why I bring this out now…rap is finally getting their songs handed to them…only better than their own versions.  Check out Travis Barker’s remix of such bad songs as “Low” and “Crank Dat” …they rock now! But seriously, just go on YouTube and search for covers…they are glorious…I especially enjoy Alanis Morrissette making fun of No-Talent-PissPants–I mean Fergie. I just recently aquired a CD entitled “Punk goes Crunk”.  It features Say Anything, Scary Kids Scaring Kids and My American Heart, among others. I love it, I prefer listening to it over Rihanna, Lil John and O’D'B.

Ok, when did it become ok to look like a tool bag while being a rockstar? Honestly, the mohawk, the skinhead, the ‘fro, and the Tom Delonge…I mean emo - all are “out there” as far as hair styles go…but seriously the rest of you all look like crap. I don’t understand how this came to be a cool thing. The 80’s had the “teased hair” - this was a bad thing, it’s already been decided. The worst part about it, its not just staying within one genre…its bled out to other bands, Hinder’s members can be found with bad hairstyles - yet they are far from “hardcore/emo/screamo/scene” I hear, “oh why can’t you judge just based on the music, its not about the girl jeans and bad hair.” It really is…check anything in the music industry…if you look stupid I don’t like you. I like some of what each genre has to offer. Punk had wrist bands, Rock had tattoos, Metal had chains, Glam rock had eyeliner, Goth had black, Rap has baggy, and JT brought Sexy back. Bad hair, nut-tight jeans, anorexia, terrible screams - count me out.

  1. First off, the way people look means nothing when it comes to the music…so your point is dumb..where do u get off bashing bands? Hinder is baaaad…there singer cant hit a dang note…and i dont care what you say “emo” is not a genre of music..i cannot stand when people call themselves or other people “emo”. its one of my biggest pet peeves. 2nd of all what in sam hell is a toolbag?! would that be what you call people that wear their jnco jeans and eyeliner while on stage? give me a break…wearing eyeliner is what i consider being a toolbag..in my opinion, your opinion is way biased because obviously you are saying this because you might not like this kind of music…the music people put out there has nothing to do with what they wear regardless of what you or anyone else says..I cant stand hearing hinder, seether, nickelback, 3 days grace or all of those bands anymore! They all sound the same…singer is baaad same guitar parts over and over…blah…i understand we all have our own opinion on music and this is mine..im not dissing anyone but the people who make this boring stuff..i need a band that can hit a high note (chiodos) a band that can hit a high note and scream to emphasize a point (underoath) i dont need a band that is horrible (seether)..and i dont need people trying to say their music is bad because what they wear (you)…haha thats all i got…

  2. No, actually you really can’t judge a band by what it looks like. The music is pretty much the most important part. But if we’re going off looks, Punk wrist bands look stupid and have for a few years now, metal chains don’t really make you look tough, glam eyeliner REALLY doesnt make you look tough, and gothic black is more emo than anything coming out of the hardcore/emo genre today. Next time, before you dis bands of a certain genre, make sure you consider the music, which happens to be growing at a faster rate in fanbase than any “seether” like “band” out there.

  3. Nothing at Stone Temple Pilots being back on tour? Whooooooo

  4. coming from someone who has quite possibly the most repulsive hair and sense of style that i have ever seen I find it hard to to even respect the fact that someone gave you the power to judge someones style. On top of that, your ignorance of music as a whole and lack of the ability to be open minded and judge music fairly for what it is and not by what it looks like makes it hard for me to believe that KBVU lets you represent them in any shape or form. You have accomplished nothing as far as music goes and have proved over and over again that your are a “tool bag”. I love Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies, mainly cause Chris is in Foo Fighters also. I also think that Chiodos and bands of the like, are incredible. The are some of the best musicians in the world.) listen to Cinematic Sunrise to hear Craig Owens versatility as a vocalist) But bashing on hair style and tight jeans is so ignorant that you should be ashamed to associate yourself with music. FACT: Robert Plant and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin wore girls jean on stage “to increase sex appeal”. FACT: They are considered one of the most influential bands of all time. FACT: The Beatles were the first to sport “emo” haircuts. FACT: The Beatles are the biggest band of all time. (the also were glam:suits and ties… and had high voices sang about love, broken hearts, girls AND WERE THE FIRST BAND TO SCREAM) now let’s hear you bash on those two bands for creating what still exists today… ready, go…

  5. OKAY! I think that whether or not a person wants to judge a band by the way they dress is their own decision. I also am kind of a hypocrite when it comes to judging. I make fun of people. Actually, I believe I can consider it a hobby because I do it so often. But, Everybody does it! So, is it wrong to judge someone by the way they dress? Probably, but everyone does it, so it’s just part of society. And nothing can be done to change that. I aslo think that criticising a band because you don’t think their music is good is wrong, but yet everyone does it. DO you want to know why there are bands out there that you don’t like? Because other people like them. It’s that simple..not everyone is alike. We have different interests in everything so if you have a problem with a band and you don’t think they are worth having an album out…why haven’t i heard you on the radio/tv? Maybe you should own up to your own opinion and show us a “REAL” band. Also, if you don’t like the song, CHANGE THE F*ING STATION ALREADY! It’s that simple……

  6. KC2 - for the record…I’m not actually supposed to reply to comments, but apparently some sort of rebuttal would be appropriate…

    1. I never actually bashed any bands music or talent…the Chiodos picture is just a perfect example of the various hair “styles”. And hair was never once referenced to the dexterity of their fingers and vocal chords…
Three Days Grace, Seether, Nickelback…oh, you must mean some of KBVU’s most heavily requested music…ok. (see how that’s not about my opinion, just doing what’s best for the general listener)

    2. High notes?? Suddenly lower octaves are the characteristics of bad singers? I think what you mean is “range” you want more range…not just the Scott Stapp four notes.

    3. Yes I can judge a band by what they look like…you all just did. Don’t tell me what I can and can’t do. lol

    4. who cares about tough? When did I bring that up?

    5. Nope, nothing about STP…maybe next week.

    To my half-son…
I hate my own hair thank you very much. Who cares what my style is? I have none, I’m a t-shirt and jeans guy. But these bands -including ones outside that genres - have to keep up an “image” for people to look at.
Have you accomplished anything? No? I’m pretty sure I help put on a great concert in 2007 here in Storm Lake that raised thousands of dollars for charity, are you going to fight and bash me on that? Then you are “dissing” everyone that enjoyed themselves there. oh and… FACT: George Harrison and John Lennon hate you now for calling them emo.

If you reply, keep yourselves annonymous…its so hardcore.

  7. KC2 - and as a member of KBVU…I apologize for my blog and comments if they offend you.

  8. you must have a bone to pick with someone. you say hardcore like its an insult or youre trying to point someone out. Congrats for putting on a concert thats admirable. I appreciate people that do that, since that is how i make my living. I live in Minneapolis, i book bands for a living. i played in a nationally touring band for 7 years. i have booked chiodos, thats why i came to their defense. i have also booked 3DG and seether. p.s. john and george aren’t able to take our calls right now, but i spoke with paul and ringo and they are down with what i said cause i didnt call them emo. i said what they write songs about and i said they introduced the hair style. they stand by what they did.
do you even know what emo means? just curious. because it means emotion, all music has emotion.
    thanks,
    tommy.
there now i’m not anonymous anymore.

  9. It is really unprofessional to comment on your own blog. Blogs are intended to incite a response, and thats what this one did. You gave your opinion in the blog, and the readers gave their opinion in their comments. What makes you think you can have more opinions that your readers? If your going to write a blog thats kind of controversial say all you need to say at the start so you don’t have to get into a “comment-fight” with your readers who are just voicing their opinions. I know personally, you really insulted my style of music and as a result, i view 97.5 in a different light and won’t be encouraging any of my friends to listen up any time soon. So thanks for that…

  10. I am not a guy that likes to start a fight but when that young lady up their says turn the effing station it really hit a nerve with me. That is the reason i am replying because when i turn it onto KBVU i hear the same music every time…i get bored with it and i do turn the station…i am sure i am not the only one to do so..as for the comment again from the girl about judging a bands music…that is the only thing a band needs to be judged by..what you said makes no sense whatsoever ..bands dont get signed because what they sound like not look like…your point is obsurd..i hope you don’t at the station..that would be too bad for the people you worked with having 2 people that have no idea what they are talking about. If you work for KBVU then why are you replying to your own blog? Thats a little unprofessional, but im not “judging” you don’t worry young lady that would be afraid that i am doing that. No offense but the bands at edgefest were NOT that good last year, but it amazing that the money went to charity so kudos to you for that. My main point is that there needs to be more variety along the genre line that you guys play…i cannot listen to the same music over and over…at times at night i will turn the radio on when i am driving home and i actually hear some pretty good music..it is a lot harder than the regular stuff…maybe you should program that kind of music more. but please no more freaklabel or mudvayne or lamb of god…
one last thing…tommy, i couldn’t agree with you more about the beatles and led zeppelin and your point about them. KC2 how dare you speak on behalf of the Beatles..they now hate you as well..goodnight

  11. sorry one more thing…kc2…did you talk to the bands and ask them if they have an image they have to maintain? thats what i thought…don’t speak on their behalf either…and when city sleeps and those bands come..you should show them what you think…they would love to play for you after they see this..

  12. Yeah, what kinda of music do you expect ot be played around here? It’s Iowa. We don’t have a lot of cool stations like the cities do, but KBVU is one the best ones that I have heard around here. If you notice, every station plays the songs over and over, it’s not just KBVU…and I listen to KBVU at work everyday…for 9 hours and I’m not tired of it yet. It’s a college radio station…I think they are doin’ pretty good for it being that.

  13. kbvu does a pretty good job. radio stations don’t always have the freedom to play what they want. KC2 and i have had our differences in the past but he’s a good guy trying to do the best he can. While we still don’t and probably won’t ever have the same opinions on music everyone is allowed their own opinions. The one thing i do agree with in all of this is the led zep and beatles point. i couldnt have said it any better myself. Fact is every type of music has their own image, there isn’t one that is any better than the other. EXCEPT. Billy Ray Cyrus’ Mullet, that own every style ever. that’s all im out.
    peace.
    justin
