Sports with Kyle Glienke - 4/11/08

Let me start off by saying this is one of my favorite times of the year in sports.  Mainly because baseball is starting and the NCAA tourney is finishing up in basketball, but since that’s come and gone, I’ll have to hold on to the fact that players in the NBA actually will start to care soon when the playoffs start.

That being said, at least there are 2 teams right now that seem to be working hard to make it to the playoffs.  The Denver Nuggets and the Golden State Warriors, who had quite a match up last night.  Denver pulled out the win, as Allen Iverson put up 33 points, and the usually-underachieving J.R. Smith added 24 as well.   The Nuggets actually showed some grit in this one, overcoming an early 16-point deficit.  I was somewhat surprised, as I figured Golden State to be the more experienced team in winning tough games, as last year’s playoff series win over Dallas showed us.  Denver now sits one game up, with just 3 games left in the season.  Looks like we won’t see Baron Davis and his crazy antics in the playoffs this year.  Too bad, the NBA needs characters like him to keep the game interesting.

Oh yea, the NHL playoffs started the other day.  And I didn’t notice.  Which is somewhat surprising because I actually kinda like hockey.  Too bad its never on TV.

In baseball, the Royals have been rolling so far this season, starting off with a series sweep of the ‘best offense in baseball’ Detroit Tigers.  Speaking of those Tigers, they have one win so far.  Keep an eye on that, it will change and the Tigers will be on top of the AL central and the Royals will be back in the cellar.  That’s not the way I want to see it, but you can’t trust baseball in April too much.

College basketball note: Kansas coach Bill Self wins big, and gets paid big as a result.  He signed a long term deal with the Jayhawks yesterday.  The details of the deal weren’t released, but he said no to Oklahoma State (his alma mater) and all the money they have.  Which is a lot…big-time booster T. Boone Pickens has thrown $165 million into the Cowboys’ athletic department.  So you know Kansas’ deal was pretty good to keep Self there.

Thats it for today,

Kyle Glienke

  1. You should also mention how the East coast bias media obsession with “Psycho T” ended abruptly when the Jayhawks put a shellacking on the Tar Heels.

Oh, and Memphis will hit important free throws down the stretch. Yeah, baby!
