Tyrant: Just Ok Music

Being the music director for KBVU for the past year has been a great job. I love it and it has been fun talking with bands and getting new music on a regular basis (and hearing it before everyone else). Although, I haven’t really been impressed with a song/band for a very long time. After reading an article in AP magazine from Ryan’s Untitled Rock Column, about just being down about music because bands anymore are just ok; this really put my thoughts into words. Think about it, how many bands from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s are pure amazing. Pink Floyd, Metallica (before their crappiness happened), Nirvana, G&R, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith….just to name a FEW. All these bands have go ne down in history for being amazing/influential and anytime you hear the opening chords of their songs you immediately know what song it is.

Now think of music today, all bands today basically sound the same. I have always been a music fan, but I like music that sounds different and does something to my ears that no other bands can/have done yet. When we get our weekly submission of music, I listen and am usually disappointed. I do have to say that once in a great while I will get a song in that I am blown away with, but that doesn’t happen often. The industry is just flooded with an over abundance of bands that recording companies are hoping to make the next great hit so they can bank of them, instead of looking for one great band, they find 600 crappy bands and try to push the same sounding music and 599 of them end up failing.

I often end up saying to myself while reviewing this music, “good enough” or “eh”. It has been a long time since I heard a song and went, “HOLY AWESOME.” I find it sad too. It really isn’t hard to impress me either, I am really into all types of rock ranging from the softer alternative to metal. I really like everything, if and only if it sounds good though. Lately there has just been a lack of great music.

I will close by saying this, there is no point in naming bands I have never heard of and telling me they are awesome. I could probably name a ton of bands you have never heard of them, there is a reason I have never heard of them. I am very well read in the music industry. I read magazines, talk to bands, and go to numerous concerts. Next time you are listening to your favorite artist, ask yourself, “is this a trend setter, or follower?” The trend setters are always the best bands. Find a band that does something different with the same instruments. Educate yourself beyond what you think is amazing; transcend sub-genres. Demand great music, not just a bunch of ok music.
